Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS)

Excellence in Education, Christianity in Action

Scribbly Gum Pre-school

Our Philosophy

  • We believe children are unique, valuable and deserving of the best care and education we can provide.
  • Mark 10:14, 16 says ‘Let the little children come to Me ... For of such is the kingdom of God ... And he took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them and blessed them.
  • We believe that children learn best by interacting, experimenting, problem solving, sharing and modelling in situations where they feel accepted, appreciated and stimulated and in which their individual needs, relational needs, developmental needs, culture and background are catered for.
  • We believe the judgement and wisdom of our staff has a valuable role in shaping the experiences of children and families.
  • We believe children are capable and resourceful and are constructive contributors to their development/learning.
  • We believe in the importance of the family and are committed to building a healthy partnership with families in the ongoing care, nurturing and education of their children.
  • We believe in the importance of respectful life enhancing relationships.
  • We believe in honouring diversity.
  • We believe in preparing the children for a successful transition to school.

Our Aims

  • To provide high quality care and education from a Christian perspective in a warm, secure, loving and educational Christian environment.
  • To support families by working in partnership with them.
  • To provide opportunities for active involvement of parents to allow the smooth transition from home and to recognise the wealth of knowledge and experience that can be shared for the benefit of all.
  • To encourage children to express feelings and to behave in a socially responsible manner.
  • To have predictable routines but still recognise the value of spontaneity.
  • To have planned provisions and opportunities appropriate to the children.
  • To encourage cooperation, consideration, self-motivation and unbiased attitudes through play.
  • To foster curiosity, enquiry and interest in each child in the world around them and a willingness to take risks.
  • To acknowledge the children as having a powerful and active contribution to their own learning.
  • To encourage children to communicate, to listen, to make decisions and accept the consequences of their decisions.
  • For everyone to be comfortable with diversity responding to it with openness and confidence.
  • To ensure there is a balance between support and autonomy for the staff.
  • To provide good working conditions, eg lunch breaks, staff meetings, inservice courses.
  • To provide a high standard of care, safety and hygiene.
  • For the children to be contributing members of the school community.
  • To integrate into NBCS, by using their resources, joining the Primary Department and networking with the teachers to foster a smooth transition into school.
